  The Brockville Army Cadets are recruiting every Tuesday 6:30pm-9:30pm. You will learn; adventure training, leadership, first aid, orienteering with map and compass, radio communications and search and rescue. Open for everyone over the age of 12.   Every Wednesday head to the Brockville and Area YMCA on Park Street in Brockville for a delicious hot lunch. Every week will be a diffent menu and cooks. Lunch is $5 and proceeds support The United Way of Leeds & Grenville (Sept 24-Dec 3rd) and the YMCA's Annual Giving Campaign (Dec 10-April 29).

December 19  Girls Inc. brings Girls' Night to the local YMCA
  Girls Incorporated of Upper Canada is hosting a weekly drop in for all girls aged 6 to 13. In partnership with the Brockville & Area YMCA, Girls Inc. will be hosting a drop in every Thursday night from 6:00pm to 8:00pm starting January 8th, 2009.
Girls’ Night is a safe and structured space where girls are celebrated for who they are and encouraged to be independent and take healthy risks. Activities engage girls in interactive, hands-on learning, the chance to gain new skills and having fun with peers through participation in group activities. A healthy snack will be provided.
Girls Inc. curriculum based programming such as Allies in Action, Media Smarts, Economic Literacy, and Operation Smart will be implemented throughout the year. All of our programs are based on the Girl’s Bill of Rights. Girls Inc. is dedicated to offering a safe environment to young girls while enhancing their sense of belonging and ownership for their successes.

  Veiled Politics: Racializing Islam Post 9/11~ Dana Olwan: PhD Candidate, Department of English.
Dana will examine recent debates on the practice of veiling in Islam. She will address the following questions: What are the politics of the contemporary focus on the veil? How are we to understand this focus in relation to Muslim women's racial difference? How does the racialization of Islam determine the perception of Muslim women? And in what ways has contemporary political discourse surrounding Muslim women been influenced by 9/11 and the 'war on terror'?

Few symbols have become more politically entrenched than the kuffiyeh, a simple, checkered, Palestinian scarf. By making visual and political links between seemingly unrelated characters, Kuffiyeh Kinderlach tracks how dramatically the meaning of a symbol can change as context is altered.
